According to a recent independent study by Loyola Marymount University, the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles’ We Are LA program is making a substantial impact in preventing people and families from becoming homeless, as featured on KCBS, KNX, and other news outlets.

“Addressing the humanitarian crisis in our City must also focus on preventing people from falling into homelessness in the first place,” said Mayor Bass. “The tens of thousands of people served by the Mayor’s Fund are not just numbers, but individuals and families who are being connected to essential services with the goal of keeping them housed. This is how we continue to change the status quo and build upon our comprehensive strategy to tackle homelessness.”

According to the study, conducted by the Center for Urban Resilience at Loyola Marymount University, nearly 75 percent of those served by the Mayor’s Fund between March and August 2024 said the stability of their housing situation improved as a result of the help they received. Of the 42,840 Angelenos served during that time period, housing stability improved for more than 29,800 people.

“The key to the program is personal, one-on-one, human-to-human support,” said Conway Collis, President and CEO of the Mayor’s Fund. “We use innovative methods to connect people to all available help, from legal services to food assistance that frees up funds to help people pay the rent. But the bottom line is the dedication of the caseworkers working with and supporting Angelenos through a tough process at a time of great need.”

The study also looked into the demographics of the Mayor’s Fund’s clients and found the majority had jobs and children.

“Because of the Mayor’s Fund’s We Are LA program, I was able to stay in my home,” said Margo Gonzalez, one of the program’s clients. “I’m supporting my adult daughter as she works through mental health issues, and there’s no way I would have been able to find another two-bedroom in my price range. They truly gave me a second chance.”
