Mayor’s Fund for LA Expands Eviction Defense for Tenants in Every Council District

In addition to We Are LA’s comprehensive casework providing access to services and benefits, in the last 18 months almost 4000 households facing eviction were provided with direct legal representation by the Mayor’s Fund’s legal services partner, Eviction Defense Network (EDN), part of the city’s Stay Housed network. Our program served renters in every one of LA’s City Council Districts preventing involuntary displacement and homelessness for thousands of households.
Each of those households is a family, a senior, a working Angeleno who might otherwise have faced eviction court alone. Without legal assistance and representation, tenants too often lose their homes and face a housing search in an inhospitable housing market with an eviction on their record — a loss that can spiral into homelessness and long-term instability.
MFLA’s legal aid services reached renters across every corner of the city. From Koreatown and Mid-City in CD10 to Leimert Park and South LA in CD8. From Downtown, Boyle Heights, and Eagle Rock in CD14 to Hollywood, Historic Filipinotown, and Echo Park in CD13. From Northeast to Central LA in CD1, to South LA in CD9. And into geographically expansive CD4, spanning the San Fernando Valley, the Hollywood Hills, and central LA, including Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Los Feliz, and Silver Lake. In all, MFLA’s free and direct eviction court legal services reached every one of the city’s 15 Council Districts.

*Specific numbers are estimates provided with 90% certainty; there is a possible 5% spread either lower or higher. EDN’s case tracking lists zip codes and neighborhoods but not full addresses. Consequently, in the 32% of zip codes split between council districts (CDs) or a CD and the county, cases were allocated in proportion to each CD’s share of that neighborhood’s rental households based on the 2020 census block data.
